Japan PM arrives at Rio Olympics as Super Mario

Japan’s at it again!

Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe enters the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics closing ceremony through a Super Mario warp pipe dressed as the famous Nintendo character on Sunday (August 21) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

As per tradition, the next hosts were afforded a short time to showcase their country and give a teaser trailer of their plans for the next Games.


It’s a fast paced, futuristic trailer featuring athletes in action against a Tokyo backdrop and scenes from manga cartoons Capitan Tsubasa and Doraemon and video game Pac Man.

Here are some interesting facts about the 2020 Tokyo Olympics:

Host city: Tokyo, Japan

Last hosted: in 1964 – the first ever Olympic Games held in Asia

Slogan: “Discover Tomorrow”

Logo: Created by designer Asao Tokolo and inspired by traditional Japanese motifs

Opening ceremony: 24 July 2020

  • Karate
  • Skateboard
  • Sports climbing
  • Surfing

Commonly known as Tokyo 2020, the 2020 Summer Olympics is planned to be held from 24 July to 9 August 2020 in Tokyo. The city was announced as the host at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013.
